Navagraha
Surya (Sun)
About
Introduction & Significance
Surya Deva, the radiant Sun God, holds a supreme position in Vedic astrology and Hinduism as the undisputed king of the Navagrahas. Venerated as a Pratyaksha Devata (visible deity), he is the very soul of the cosmic creation. Lord Surya holds a special place in the revered Panchdeva worship, allowing living beings to witness his divine presence every single day. The Vedas intricately describe him as the cosmic eye of the Supreme Lord, a profound truth beautifully captured in the Yajurveda:
Chakshho Suryo Jayat
Known by various powerful names such as Bhaskar, Diwakar, Narayana, and Hiranyagarbha, worshiping Lord Surya is believed to grant immense vitality, excellent health, longevity, and spiritual enlightenment. Ancient scriptures like the Chandogya Upanishad and Brahmavaivarta Purana extensively glorify his profound impact on human life, stating that regular worship and meditation on the Sun can even bless a family with righteous lineage.
Mythological Origin
The Puranas narrate a fascinating tale regarding the birth and manifestation of Surya Deva. In ancient times, a fierce celestial battle led to the demons expelling the deities from the heavens. Distressed by the painful plight of her children, the divine mother Goddess Aditi performed rigorous penance to seek the grace of Lord Surya. Deeply pleased with her unwavering devotion, Lord Surya appeared and granted her a boon to be born as her son to restore cosmic balance.
Later, a dispute arose between Aditi and her husband, Sage Prajapati Kashyapa. In a moment of anger, Kashyapa referred to the child in her pregnant womb as Mrit (dead). Instantly, a blazing, divine ray of light emerged from Goddess Aditi, manifesting as the majestic Sun God. He was named Vivasvan by Prajapati Kashyapa. During the ensuing battle, the sheer brilliance and immense might of Vivasvan proved unbearable for the demons, forcing them to flee the battlefield and securing eternal victory for the deities.
Family & Lineage
Surya Deva was born to Maharishi Kashyapa and Goddess Aditi. He has an elder brother, Devraja Indra, and ten younger brothers known collectively as the Adityas, which include Dhata, Pusha, Aryama, Mitra, and Varuna. Lord Surya has two principal consorts, Goddess Sangya and Goddess Chhaya, through whom he fathered a highly revered cosmic lineage. His most notable children include:
Lord Shani: The deity of justice and karmic retribution.
Yamraj & Yamuna: The God of Death and the sacred river goddess.
Ashwini Kumaras: The divine twin physicians of the celestial realms.
Karna & Sugriva: The legendary warrior of the Mahabharata and the Vanara king of the Ramayana.
Others: Vaivaswat Manu, Revant, Tapati, Savarni Manu, and Bhadra.
Iconography & Appearance
Traditional iconography depicts Lord Surya in a magnificent four-armed form, radiating with a golden, yellow, or blood-red complexion that perfectly symbolizes life force and eternal fire. In his three hands, he holds sacred attributes: the Shankha (conch), Chakra (discus), and Padma (lotus), while his fourth hand remains in the reassuring Varada Mudra (boon-granting gesture). Along with these, he is associated with powerful divine weapons like the Sudarshan Chakra, trident, and mace.
Lord Surya majestically traverses the sky riding an opulent chariot driven by his divine charioteer, Aruna. This cosmic chariot is drawn by seven resplendent horses, representing the seven days of the week, the seven colors of light, and the seven meters of Vedic poetry. It is said that this majestic chariot travels an astonishing thirty-four lakh eight hundred Yojanas in just one Muhurta (two hours). Astrologically, the Sun represents the soul, vital energy, and father figure, holding sovereign lordship over the Leo (Simha) zodiac sign.
