Budha (Mercury)
About
Origin & Mythology
Budha, the planet Mercury, was born of a union that scandalised the celestial court: Chandra (the Moon), enchanted by the beauty of Tara, wife of Brihaspati (Jupiter, guru of the gods), abducted her, and their union produced a son so remarkably brilliant that even the assembled sages could not help but admire him despite the impropriety of his birth. The resulting conflict, remembered as the Tarakamaya war, drew in Brihaspati, Chandra, and their respective allies until Brahma himself intervened to restore peace, at which point Tara revealed that Chandra, not Brihaspati, was the child's true father - and Brahma, struck by the infant's profound intelligence, named him Budha.
Despite the circumstances of his birth, Budha was raised with honour and in time married Ila, daughter of Vaivasvata Manu. From this union was born Pururava, who went on to found the Chandravansha, the lunar dynasty of kings from which many legendary figures of later Puranic history trace their descent - giving Budha a lasting place not only among the Navagrahas but at the root of an entire royal lineage.
Iconography
Budha is depicted with a yellow-green complexion, likened to the Kaner flower, and four arms holding a sword, a shield, a mace, and his fourth hand raised in the varada mudra, garlanded with yellow flowers. He is shown either riding a lion or, in another well-known depiction, a chariot pulled by ten flying lions, evoking both his youthful vigour and his mental agility.
In Vedic astrology, Budha rules Gemini and Virgo, is exalted in Virgo and debilitated in Pisces, and is honoured as the crown prince among the Navagrahas for his sharp intellect; his gemstone is emerald, his colour green, and Wednesday is sacred to him.
