Navagraha
Mangal (Mars)
About
Origin & Mythology
Mangal, also called Angaraka, Kuja, or Bhauma, is the fiery commander among the Navagrahas, and his origin is told in more than one way across the Puranas. The Skanda Purana describes him as born from three drops of sweat that fell from Lord Shiva's forehead during his fierce battle with the demon Andhakasura, near Ujjain. The Brahmavaivarta and Devi Bhagavata Puranas instead trace him to Goddess Bhumi (the Earth) and Lord Vishnu in his Varaha (boar) incarnation, which is why Mangal is most commonly called Bhauma, "son of the Earth," regardless of which telling is followed.
Whichever account is followed, Mangal grew into a fierce and disciplined deity, closely counted among the many children born to Shiva and the Earth in different traditions - a family that in some tellings also includes Ganesha, Kartikeya, and Andhakasura himself. Some Puranas describe Mangal as married to Goddess Jwalini, while others describe him as an eternal bachelor wholly devoted to discipline and duty, a duality that mirrors his astrological reputation for both fierce independence and difficulty in domestic harmony.
Iconography
Mangal is depicted with a blood-red complexion and four arms, holding a trident, a mace, a lotus, and a spear, with his hands also shown in the varada (boon-granting) and abhaya (fearlessness) mudras in some depictions. His vehicle is the ram, and he is honoured at temples such as Mangalnath in Ujjain, believed to mark his very birthplace, as well as Mangaleshwar in Gwalior.
In Vedic astrology, Mangal rules Aries and Scorpio, is exalted in Capricorn and debilitated in Cancer, and his gemstone is red coral; Tuesday is sacred to him, and Mangal Dosha in a birth chart is a factor closely examined before marriage.
