Shukra (Venus)

Origin & Mythology

Shukra, known in his own right as Ushanas of the Kavya lineage, was born to the great sage Bhrigu and his wife Kavyamata. His mother met a tragic end when Lord Vishnu, protecting the Devas, slew her for sheltering the Asuras from his wrath - a loss that shaped Shukra's lifelong, unwavering loyalty to the very demons his mother had died defending. He studied first under sage Angiras and later under Rishi Gautama, and in time succeeded to the position of Asuracharya, guru of the Daityas.

To aid the Asuras in their endless wars against the Devas, Shukra undertook severe penance to Lord Shiva and was granted the Sanjivani Vidya, the secret knowledge of reviving the dead - a boon that let him repeatedly restore fallen Asura warriors to life and made him indispensable to his followers despite the Devas' repeated victories on the battlefield.

Iconography

Shukra is depicted with a fair, radiant complexion, seated on a white lotus, with four arms holding a staff, a rudraksha rosary, a water vessel, and his fourth hand in the varada mudra. His vehicle varies by tradition - shown riding a camel, a horse, or a crocodile - and he is dressed in white, reflecting the refinement and grace associated with his domain.

In Vedic astrology, Shukra rules Taurus and Libra, is exalted in Pisces and debilitated in Virgo, and governs beauty, love, comfort, and artistic talent; his gemstone is diamond, his metal silver, his colour white, and Friday is sacred to him.
