Navagraha
Shani (Saturn)
About
Origin & Mythology
Shani was born to Surya, the Sun, and his wife Chhaya (also known as Samvarna), but his birth carried an early hardship that would shape his entire character. While pregnant with Shani, Chhaya observed intense devotion to Lord Shiva, keeping an austere and irregular routine that, tradition holds, caused the child to be born with a strikingly dark complexion. Surya, seeing a son so unlike himself in appearance, doubted his own paternity - a suspicion that wounded both mother and child and planted the seed of the famously strained relationship between Shani and his father that Vedic astrology still reckons with today.
In response to this early rejection, Shani turned to unwavering penance before Lord Shiva, who was moved by his devotion and granted him an extraordinary boon: that Shani would hold the most significant place among the nine grahas, and that both gods and mortals alike would come to hold his name in awe. This blessing is why Shani's transits, rather than being feared as simple misfortune, are understood in Vedic tradition as impartial, karma-driven justice that ultimately rewards patience and integrity.
Family
Father: Surya (the Sun)
Mother: Chhaya (Samvarna)
Wife: Neeladevi, also called Dhamini, daughter of Chitrarath
Siblings: Yamraja, Yamuna, Vaivasvata Manu, Savarni Manu, Karna, and Sugriva, among others born of Surya's unions
Iconography
Shani is depicted with a dark, sapphire-blue complexion, dressed in blue garments with gold ornaments, and shown with four arms holding a bow, an arrow, and a trident, with his fourth hand in the varada mudra. He is most often shown riding a crow or a vulture, though some depictions show him on an elephant, horse, donkey, lion, or jackal, and his chariot is built of iron, reflecting his association with hard labour and unyielding discipline.
In Vedic astrology, Shani rules Capricorn and Aquarius, is exalted in Libra and debilitated in Aries, and governs longevity, discipline, and the consequences of past karma; his gemstone is blue sapphire, his metal iron, and Saturday is sacred to him.
