What is Panchang?

Panchang (Sanskrit: पञ्चाङ्ग) is the Hindu almanac that gives daily astrological details based on traditional Hindu calendrical calculations. The word means "five limbs" - the five elements used to describe the quality and timing of a day. Priests, astrologers, and families across India often consult the Panchang before weddings, business launches, housewarming ceremonies, and other important events.

The Five Elements of Panchang

Element What it represents
TithiLunar day - based on the angular distance between the Sun and Moon, measured in 12° segments, cycling from 1-30 across the bright and dark fortnights
NakshatraLunar mansion - one of the 27 divisions the Moon transits, each with distinct qualities and a ruling deity
YogaA daily yoga - calculated from the sum of the Sun's and Moon's longitudes and divided into 27 segments; different yogas are traditionally considered more or less auspicious
KaranaHalf of a Tithi - there are 11 Karanas that cycle through the lunar month; some, such as Bava, Balava, and Kaulava, are traditionally considered auspicious
VaraWeekday (Vara) - each day is traditionally associated with a planetary ruler: Sunday (Sun), Monday (Moon), Tuesday (Mars), Wednesday (Mercury), Thursday (Jupiter), Friday (Venus), Saturday (Saturn)

Why does Panchang change with location?

Panchang timings are anchored to the local sunrise and sunset. Since the Sun rises at a different moment in every city, periods like Rahu Kaal, Abhijit Muhurta and the ending times of tithi and nakshatra shift from one place to another. Always consult the Panchang calculated for your own city before fixing a muhurat.

What is Rahu Kaal?

Rahu Kaal (Rahu Kalam) is a traditionally inauspicious period of approximately 90 minutes that occurs once every day between sunrise and sunset. In Vedic astrology, it is associated with Rahu, the shadow planet. Starting new or important work during Rahu Kaal is traditionally avoided. The period shifts each day of the week and is calculated based on local sunrise and sunset times.

Auspicious Timings (Shubh Muhurat)

A Muhurat is a traditionally auspicious window of time chosen by combining a favourable Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana, and Vara. Important timings referenced in the Panchang include Brahma Muhurta (about 96 minutes before sunrise, traditionally valued for meditation and study), Abhijit Muhurta (a midday period widely treated as auspicious), and Chandrabalam (times when the Moon is considered favourable for your birth sign). Many people also avoid Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, and Gulika Kalam before beginning important events.
